Most people remember Jonah as the story of a runaway prophet and a giant fish. But at its heart, Jonah is the story of a man who received God’s mercy while resisting God’s heart for others.
In this message from our series, More Than a Story, we see God pursue Jonah, rescue him from the deep, and give him another chance to carry mercy to Nineveh. Jonah obeyed the assignment, but his anger revealed an uncomfortable truth: he wanted grace for himself and judgment for the people he believed did not deserve it.
Jonah resented mercy, but Jesus embodied it. At the cross, Jesus took the judgment we deserved so mercy could reach us. Now the mercy God gives to us must become the mercy that moves through us.
How long will you keep wavering between two opinions?
That was Elijah’s question to Israel on Mount Carmel. The people had not necessarily stopped believing that God existed, but they had divided their allegiance between the Lord and Baal. They wanted God without fully surrendering to God—and that divided worship had created an identity crisis.
